Evacuated!

At about 5:30 pm yesterday an explosion occurred at the Silver Eagle Refinery right by our house. I had a hard time getting home from work, they had all of our roads blocked off but I snuck through an apartment complex and was able to get to a side street that would lead to my house. When I got home Tyler and the kids were watching the news and they were saying that people needed to evacuate their homes. Policemen were running door to door telling people to leave their homes. It was really weird. From our front window we could see the flames being sprayed with water and we could hear all the sirens. Britton and Shayna were both so upset/scared. They didn't really understand what was going on. We grabbed our pajamas and tooth brushes and headed out. We decided to go out to dinner and then over to my parents house. We hung out at my parents house until they lifted the evacuation order at 9:30pm. They made it a voluntary evacuation and opened up Woods Cross High School for shelter. They said if we were too scared to go to our homes we could sleep at the shelter. Apparently there were a lot of people that stayed at the shelter but we went home. Everything turned out ok but we had quite the adventure.

I want to thank everyone that called to check on us. It means a lot to us that so many people care... We love you all.

On another note (but has some relation to the above post.....I think??)

A couple of weeks ago Shay told me she wanted to stop sucking her thumb because she doesn't want to look like a baby any more. I think someone at preschool may have said something to her. It makes me sad that someone made her feel bad but I am also thankful because I have tried (very gently) for about a year to get her to stop. I bought some nail polish that tastes bitter but she just said she could get used to the flavor and sucked her thumb any way. I tried reminding her not to put her thumb in her mouth when I would see her (which was ALL the time). We talked about how bad it could be on her teeth and nothing worked. So after she came to me and told me she was ready I started doing some research on the Internet and found a nail polish called Mavala Stop. It's Doctor recommended and guaranteed to work. I bought it and we have been using it on Shay's thumb. That stuff is NASTY! It has an awful bitter taste and makes your tongue feel a little numb and it burns your throat. You can taste it if you just touch your lips with your thumbnail. I felt bad that Shay had to go through it so I told her I would put it on my thumbnail too. Let me just say, you have no idea how often you put your hands by your mouth. I taste it every time I put something in my mouth or lick my fingers, its awful. But it was doing its job very well. Shay didn't want to get her thumb anywhere near her mouth until she realized she had another one. So after we painted both of her thumbnails I thought she would be cured. She has had the best attitude about it and never complained that we were doing this. She went three days without sucking her thumb, I was so proud of her. But last night on our way home from my parents house I noticed she was sucking her finger. I think she was feeling a little worried about everything and needed the security. We put her to bed and when Tyler went to bed he went in to check on her and noticed that she had fallen asleep sucking her thumb. GGRRRR, this is so frustrating, I hate that she is going through this, I really don't want to have to paint all of her fingers, she won't be able to eat, that stuff is seriously nasty. I guess we'll see.

How scary about the evacuation. my neighbor behind has a little girl Shay's age and is trying to get her to stop before Kindergarten next year. I will have to give her the name of that polish.

How about this idea for the thumbs. What if you got bright pretty polish colors and little gems (let her choose) and then paint her nails, but when you see her thumb in her mouth you take it off all the nails for say the rest of the day. Then the next day you can repaint them. The longer she keeps her thumbs out of her mouth the longer she gets to keep the pretty nail polish and stuff.

And we are glad you guys are ok. we were wondering how close you were to the explosion!!!!
